Siming Chen Tears through JPNEWT WPBA US Open Qualifier

April 21, 2013

Siming Chen, ranked #3 in the WPA, tore through the J. Pechauer Northeast Women’s Tour (JPNEWT) opening event of 2013. On the weekend of April 20-21, 2013, with $1500 in the purse and twenty-seven competitors, JPNEWT held the Maryland State Championship and WPBA U.S. Open qualifier at Triple Nines Bar and Billiards in Elkridge, Maryland.

JPNEWT started off the year on a positive note. The turn-out for the first event was pretty good, attracting most of the regulars from last year and former players like Yomaylin “Smiley” Feliz from New York. Welcome back Smiley! I was also impressed by the amount of new players on the scene. The tour welcomes Jen Sylvester, Alex Calabrese, Paula Dickerson, Arron Haefele, Suzanne Sellet, Ann Grintsuk, and Amanda Wilder.

In 2012, Megan Smith was the Maryland State Champion and returned to defend her title. However, there was a beast in the house that went undefeated, crowned Maryland’s new champ, and qualified for the WPBA US Open. Siming Chen dominated the bottom half of the field as she swiftly went through Lenore Donovan and Nicole Vincent 7-1, Linda Shea and Nicole Nester 7-3.

Meanwhile, from the top of the field, BCA Hall of Famer, Karen Corr, was doing a lot of damage. Corr swept through Aaron Haefele, Courtney Hall and Kathy Friend. She also downed Yomaylin Feliz 7-4.

Coming down to the hot seat match, Corr and Chen faced-off. Corr could not quite get through Chen. While Chen awaits her final match, Corr quickly won the semifinals for a rematch against Chen. Although the final round was a modified race to 9, Corr couldn’t get passed two games on Chen; awarding Chen the champ.

It is noteworthy to acknowledge Feliz’s accomplishments in this event. After taking some time off from JPNEWT, she returned with a bang and took third place. Her victims were Alex Calabrese, Borana “Killer B” Andoni, Shanna Lewis, Nicole Nester, and Kathy Friend. I also acknowledge our JPNEWT Amateur winner, Jennifer Nhek, for her second consecutive win which allotted her free entry into this event. Last but not least, Linda Shea, our director, was recently inducted into the New England Hall of Fame. Way to go ladies!

The JPNEWT thanks all the players for participating in this event and spreading the word to other lady players. We appreciate all the fans and spectators both on site and at http://www.ustream.tv. A special thank you goes out to Stan Natsiatka, owner of Triple Nines Bar and Billiards, for hosting this event and supporting women in billiards. Continued thanks go out to J. Pechauer Custom Cues for your continued support and sponsorship.

Miller Goes Undefeated -- Feliz takes Ultimate 10-Ball Qualifier

May 19, 2013

The J. Pechauer Northeast Women’s Tour (JPNEWT) took its second 2013 stop to the Raxx Pool Room, Sports Bar & Grill in West Hempstead, NY during the weekend of May 18-19, 2013.  With $1500 added, twenty ladies fought a good fight to qualify for the upcoming Ultimate 10-Ball Championships in Tunica, MS.

Briana Miller starts her tour year off with a bang as she goes undefeated at this qualifier event.  Miller sent the following players west as she traveled to the hot seat: tour director Linda Shea 7-3, Borana Andoni 7-4, Shanna Lewis 7-4, and Yomaylin “Smiley” Feliz.

Meanwhile, Feliz was causing damage as well before being sent west by Miller. She went through Kia Sidbury 7-4, Colleen Shoop 7-3, and Nicole Nester 7-2. From the 1-loss side Feliz defeated Linda Shea7-5 for a final chance at Miller.

In the finals, Feliz fought a good fight and was determined to take down Miller.  She was successful in extending the race to a modified 9 and played a double-hill match, but Miller took the match and qualified for the Ultimate 10-Ball Championships.  Although Miller qualified, she will not be available to compete in the championship. Feliz accepted the spot.

The JPNEWT thanks all the players for participating in this event and spreading the word to other in your circle.  Special thanks go out to Holden Chen of Raxx Pool Room for hosting this event and supporting women in billiards.  Continued thanks go out to J. Pechauer Custom Cues for your continued support and sponsorship. Future tour stops can be found at: www.jpnewt.com

Shea Dominates First Break!

July 28, 2013

The J. Pechauer Northeast Women’s Tour (JPNEWT) held its third tour stop of the 2013 season at First Break Café in Sterling, Virginia on July 27-28, 2013. Also, Coins of the Realm, one of the two newly acquired sponsors of JPNEWT, added $500 toward first, second, and third place finish.

In a field of 18 ladies, Linda Shea went undefeated. She breezed through Kathy Friend 7-2, Nicole Vincent, 7-3 and Pauline Mattes 7-2. Kia Sidbury was fighting back after Shea had a huge lead on her, but also fell to Shea 7-5. Shea’s victory over Sidbury put her in the match for the hot seat.

Meanwhile, Ji-Hyun Park withstood her opponents to meet Shea in the match for the hot seat. Park sent a few ladies west before meeting Shea. She defeated Colleen Shoop 7-4, Susan Shinn 7-5, and Nicole Vincent in a double-hill match. However, when Park met Shea, Shea sent her west as well. Park’s mission was to redeem herself against Shea as her loss to Shea advanced her to the semifinals.

Park had to go through Vincent again to meet Shea in the finals. Early on, Nester went through Dawn Fox twice, Shanna Lewis 7-4 and Tricia Tennant 7-2. Yet, Vincent fell once more to Park, leaving Vincent with a nice third place finish bumping her current JPNEWT ranking to #2.

The finals were met with Linda Shea versus Ji-Hyun Park in a modified race to 9. Although Shea practically swept through Park in their first bout, Park wasn’t allowing that to happen so easily this round. Shea had the lead on Park, but Park was able to tie things up 6-6. The next game would determine if the match would extend to a race to 9. Unfortunately for Park, Shea won that game, and in turn, won the tournament.

The JPNEWT thanks all the players for participating in this event and spreading the word to other in your circle. Special thanks go out to First Break Cafe for hosting this event and supporting women in billiards. Continued thanks go out to J. Pechauer Custom Cues for your continued support and sponsorship. JPNEWT also extends a grateful thanks to our new sponsors Coins of the Realm and Black Heart Premium Billiard Tips. JPNEWT next tour stop will be held at Raxx Pool Room, Bar & Grill in West Hempstead, NY on September 14-15, 2013 with $1500 added.

Shea Triumphs Again.. This Time at RAXX!

September 15, 2013

The J. Pechauer Northeast Women’s Tour (JPNEWT) returned to the Raxx Pool Room, Sports Bar & Grill in West Hempstead, NY for the NY State Championship. With a $1500 add-on, fifteen ladies competed during the weekend of September 14-15, 2013. Although JPNEWT is a 2-day tour, the tour decided to scale back to a 1-day event to make room for an opportunity for the ladies to compete in the Women’s World 10-ball qualifier the next day.

Linda Shea takes JPNEWT again. At the last event Shea had to double-dip a player to take top dollar. Shea was met with several close matches but did not face any repeat offenders. Returning member, Erica Testa, started out strong with a 7-4 victory of newcomer Latonia Taylor. Testa was then faced with Nicole Nester (ranked #2 thus far) who sent her west. That didn’t hold Testa back from being the winner of the 1-loss side. She took down Suzanne Sellet 7-1, Alex Calabrese 7-4, Borana Andoni 7-3, Yomaylin “Smiley” Feliz 7-1 to reach Dawn Fox in the semifinals.

Dawn’s journey was a shorter one. She defeated Sellet 7-1, Kia Sidbury 7-4, and Andoni 7-6 before sent west by Shea in her second double-hill match of the day. Fox had one match between her and a possible rematch against Shea, but could not get through Testa in a 7-3 finish. The finals were met with Shea versus Testa. Shea took Testa down 7-5 and claimed her second win of the year.

JPNEWT’s next event is scheduled for October 12, 2013 only at Top Hat Cue Clue in Parkville, Maryland. This is a $500 added event. A newly acquired sponsor, Coins of the Realm, is supporting this event by adding $500 (1st $300, 2nd & 3rd $100), which now makes this a $1000 added event. The ladies of JPNEWT appreciate the support of all of our sponsors.

Jia Li Sweeps Top Hat!

October 12, 2013

The J. Pechauer Northeast Women’s Tour (JPNEWT) tour returned to Maryland and held a 17-player field event at Top Hat Cue Club in Parkville, Maryland.  This was a $500 added event.  However, since this event was held in Maryland, Coins of the Realm added an additional $500 to the pot ($300 toward first, and $100 towards second and third places).

This event drew newcomers Jia Li, Amanda Reinken, and Teresa Thomas.  Of these three, Li intercepted Linda Shea’s winning streak. Linda is currently the top ranked JPNEWTer.  Jia Li is ranked within the top 40 ladies in the world.  I recall first seeing her while practicing at the 2013 Ultimate 10-Ball Championships, in which she finished 9th place. Prior to that, she fell to Allison Fisher at the 2013 Super Billiards Expo Women’s Pro event in the finals.

Jia went through Borana Andoni 7-4, Kia Sidbury 7-1, and in-laws Nicole Nester 7-3 and Colleen Shoop 7-2, to claim the hot seat. Meanwhile, Dawn Fox defeated Alex Calabrese 7-4, but was sent west by Nicole Nester 7-4.  Fox was able to hold strong on the 1-loss side which took her straight to the finals.  Fox put down Amanda Reinken, Linda Shea 7-5, Sharon O'Hanlon 7-4, Borana Andoni 7-4, and Colleen Shoop 7-4.  In spite of her strong previous wins, Fox couldn’t get past Li and took second.

The JPNEWT continues to thank its sponsors: J. Pechauer Custom Cues, Coins of the Realm (Maryland events). JPNEWT appreciates Top Hat Cue Club and its staff for their support.

Jia Li Tri-Fecta at Triple Nines!

November 30, 2013

The season finale of the J. Pechauer Northeast Women’s Tour was held at Triple Nines Bar and Billiards in Elkridge, Maryland on the weekend of November 30, 2013.  It was a great turnout of 23 ladies for a chance at $1,000.  This event was also the last opportunity for the ladies to earn ranking points in hopes of qualifying for the upcoming regional tour championships.

Jia Li ripped through JPNEWT a third time consecutively.  Li sent the following players west to take her to the hot seat match: Teresa Thomas 7-1, went hill-hill with Linda Shea, Nicole Nester 7-3, and Dawn Fox 7-1.  Meanwhile, Dawn Fox currently ranked #3, took down Denise Reeve 7-4, Ji-Hyun Park 7-5, Jennifer Nhek 7-4 (JPNEWT amateur champ).

In the hot seat match, Jia practically swept Dawn, leaving Dawn a chance to fight back from the semifinal round.  In the semifinals, Fox had to face the #2 ranked player Nicole Nester.  Early on, Nester defeated Briana Miller in a hill-hill battle.  She also defeated Colleen Shoop 7-5 and Kathy Friend 7-4.  After being sent west by Jia 7-3, Nicole took down Sharon O’Hanlon 7-2, and knocked out Friend in a rematch 7-4.  Now the second and third ranked ladies went at it, with Fox finishing on top.

With a chance at a rematch against Li, Fox did not allow Jia to sweep her.  Fox caused the race to extend to 9 by winning 5 games over Li, but that wasn’t enough.  Li kept Fox at 5 games, and took the win 9-5.
